This review is from: StarTech 3.5-Inch to 5.25-Inch Floppy Mounting Kit Bracket (Black Plastic) (Personal Computers) Despite some of the reviews about this product being loose or not fitting in the chassis correctly I gave it a shot to install my SD card reader in my premium Chassis. I can say that those reviews are wrong, I had no issues installing this and I have no issues with it not fitting properly or being loose. The self latching clamps fit like a charm and you have to use the screws provided by your chassis to secure it on the other side. No Issues what so ever and would recommend this product to anyone., August 26, 2013

    Solid Build... Poor Design

3/5 Jason L - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech 3.5-Inch to 5.25-Inch Floppy Mounting Kit Bracket (Black Plastic) (Personal Computers) Solid build. It fits well in my 5.25" bay. My only problem is that the mounting bracket, where you mount your 3.5" device. The plastic is too thick and a lot of pressure was needed just to get a few threads in to hold my device in place. In fact, I could not get the final screw in because of the tension that was created screwing the device in on the opposite side., March 13, 2015

    SHALLOW DEPTH EQUALS BENT PINS

Ordered this for a customer who uses CF cards. The problem with the design of this device at least for the CF slot, has to do with slot alignment and the poor path for inserting cards due to the shallow depth. Here is the problem. The CF card is 1 3/8" deep. The StarTech CF slot is only 3/8" deep leaving one inch exposed. The shallow depth allows the card to be inserted at varying angles causing pins to bend in their device. Once a pin bends, it's almost impossible to trust a device like this. In comparison, I measured another card reader from a Dell P/N: 0W812M and it has a depth of one inch that perfectly aligns the CF card on the inner rails, making it almost impossible to bend pins. I now have a device returned from a customer due to this issue and will have to replace it out of pocket. I would suggest you look elsewhere for a card reader if you are using CF cards, the other slots seem fine mostly because the other cards are shorter and therefore end up with more card... 1/5 Frank Parks (Temecula, Ca, US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very Handy Tool

As a photography hobbyist, I tend to take a lot of pictures. I always got tire of having to pull out my external card reader, plug it into the USB drive, cussing it because the cord was too short....but it always worked pretty good and downloaded the images quickly from the SD card. After that card reader quit working, I started searching for a replacement. Which is when I came upon the StarTech.com 3.5-Inch Front Bay 22-In-1 USB 2.0 Internal Multi Media Memory Card Reader. I have only had occasion to use it a few times, but it works very well. It was shipped quickly and arrived in good shape. This unit is very easy to install if you have a least a modicum of experience with installing external drives to your computer and hooking things up to your motherboard. Once installed, I turned the computer on, the driver software automatically installed and it worked immediately.I had also purchased the StarTech 3.5-Inch to 5.25-Inch Floppy Mounting Kit Bracket (Black... 5/5 Marc Mulkey - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good device, definitely recommend.

The StarTech SAT32MSAT257 mSATA SSD adapter turned out to be a pretty good addition to my gear collection. It is identical to the unit sold by Micro SATA Cables so I can't be sure who actually manufactures the device. I can tell you that it does exactly what it is designed for... it allows you to install a SATA III (6Gbps) mSATA SSD for use in a standard 2.5" SATA bay and run it at full speed. What attracted me to this adapter is the "open frame" design. Anyone with any amount of experience with this type of gear should be able to agree that many mSATA drives run hot. When mSATA drives are installed in full enclosures the heat can be trapped inside the enclosure which increases the drives temp and eventually reduces its lifespan. Some enclosures have thermal pads that help transfer heat from the mSATA drives to the metal cases of the enclosures but that functionality isn't universal and isn't always as reliable as it should be. With an open frame adapter such as... 5/5 J.Gobert (Franklin, LA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great for my laptop which has only a SATA 3.0gbps for mSATA drives, but a SATA 6gbps for 2.5"

5/5 MVR - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch SATA Adapter Converter with Open Frame Bracket and 7mm Drive Height (SAT32MSAT257) (Personal Computers) I have a performance laptop from Original PC (the EON 17S), but as wonderful as it is, the mSATA port on-board is only SATA 3.0gbps. In order to take advantage of the 6.0gbps standard, you have to be using the 2.5" drive bays with your SSD. Realizing this, I decided to take my mSATA drive and convert it to a 2.5" SSD and purchased this device to do that. The device worked flawlessly, enabling me to plug my mSATA drive into the 2.5" drive bay and effectively DOUBLE the speed in which it was able to function. It basically enabled the computer to recognize the mSATA drive as a standard 2.5" SSD without any issues. If you have a laptop with mSATA support, you may want to check what version of SATA it is capable of, and if you have the same issue as me, this device is a GREAT solution for getting the true performance out of your mSATA drive. A great set of enclosures. Read reviews with some caution (for reasons I explain).

These are a great set of derive enclosures. Please be careful when reading the reviews since the product page allows you to choose from 5 different models. And those models may change over time. Yet all the same reviews show for all the models with the same value for the "This review is from" line above the review. Also, I've noticed that some of the specifications people are stating in their reviews completely contradict the information in the product description and from the manufacturers website. This is likely due to newer models coming out since they did their review. For example, at the time I am wiring this, the most useful review states as a con that it "doesn't fit drives with > 9.5mm height". Well... that's only true for the models that specific say "fits drive up 9.5mm" or "fits drive up to 7mm". It's certainly not true for the model that "fits drives up to 12.5mm". So that review is for a very specific review. The same review... 5/5 Amazon Customer (Buffalo, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Small size & high speed

PROS* very small in size, especially length-wise* elegant black aluminium* USB 3.0 with UASP (USB-Attached-SCSI) support* cable connector & activity LED on front face* no need for separate power cable (just one USB 3.0 shared data/power cable)* micro USB 3.0 connector (also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 cables)* fair priceCONS* doesn't fit drives with > 9.5mm height* no SATA-III (6Gbit/s) support, SATA-II (3Gbit/s) only* drive is a bit hard to get in & outCOMMENTSOverall I really love the design, functionality and speed of the drive.I use it with a 1TB 9.5mm WD drive for backups, so the drive height limitation is not a problem for me. I listed this as a con however as there are taller 2TB backup drives from WD as well, and you won't be able to fit those if you need more backup space.I also put the lack of SATA-III as a con, even though with a physical HDD this will... 5/5 D. No Trim support

Speed was ok, but was disappointed that it failed Trimcheck (so Trim not passed through). I hesitate using an enclosure that doesn't pass Trim through with an SSD, so I wrote to the company, and won't be using this for now.3/25/2017 - Update - Startech still does not provide firmware for this enclosure to support Trim (despite saying they were working on it for several months now), but they have a "new" model, the S251BMU313CB, that apparently does. handy way to mount an SSD

I've got a couple of servers and needed to find a way to mount an SSD without taking up any of the other drive mounting locations. This little device allows mounting the drive in an otherwise unused expansion slot. All it needs it an open backpanel slot and it doesn't matter what kind. The device itself doesn't plug into the slot, it just rests over it. So you can use a slot with PCI, PCI-e or whatever. It connects to your computer using a SATA port an a power connection, just like any other drive mounting setup.I don't use mine for hot swapping (pulling the drive out while the machine is booted) so I can't comment on that. I just use mine as fast boot drives. The way the device fits through the back panel slot can be tricky on some cases. Most will work fine, but a couple I've tried had slots that were just a little too narrow for this to open/close properly. This is a defect in the case, not this device. So if you're looking for a... 4/5 Bill Kearney (Bethesda, MD USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Visually and electr[on]ically these make a nice presentation. I put in my Samsung SSDs and the top bay ate my drive. Disassembling the unit, I found that the lever arm pushing out the drive would slide over the top of the drive. The drive in question was 0.258" (about 6.5mm) thick.I put couple layers of glass-reinforced packing tape on the inside top of the case to keep the lever down and added a loop of tape to the drive soit could be pulled out if need be. Another unit was fussy about lining up the drive to accept it at the connector.Versus Kingwin KF-251-BK rack: structurally the Kingwin is better made: stronger and better design for the lever; it (KF-251) is open for ventilation. The Kingwin comes with stubby adapting cables, each drive takes a power and data cable. The Startech uses only one power cable. The Startechlooks better installed -- no large logo and the activity lights are nicer.I did not buy Kingwin because I had... 2/5 rir (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) decent product but may require fixes/modifications for certain cases.

I actually like this product, but it does have a few flaws. I think if the manufacturer can fix these flaws, it would be an awesome product. That said, I'm not one to shy away from doing a little "customization" with my dremel tool. Here are some details about the flaws:1. the PCI bracket that fits in the opening at the rear of your PC case is a little too wide on the "short" end of the "L" bracket. Specifically, about 1mm too wide on the side opposite the notch for the hold down screw. some cases expect the bracket to meet standards and have an upright tab that is meant to hold the "short" end of the "L" bracket in place. if your case has this, this product's PCI L-bracket will not fit or you have to cut off 1mm. I used a rotary tool with a cut-off wheel to do this.2. the side of this product that is meant to sit on top of the electrical PCI-E slot has brackets to assist in holding it in place, specifically there's a... 3/5 TheOG (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
