    Possible incompatibility with some drives

I recently purchased a StarTech.com S3510BMU33B "USB 3.0 to 3.5" SATA III Upright HDD Enclosure With UASP". Inside I have a "Western Digital 2TB AV-GP SATA 3 Gb/s Intellipower 32 MB Cache AV Hard Drive" model WD20EVDS that I purchased from Amazon in August 2010.The problem I am having is this.. when I connect the enclosure to my Mid-2014 MacBook Pro 13" w/Retina display, the drives are immediately ejected upon mounting. I get the following kernel messages in the Console (there are three partitions on the drive):kernel: IOUSAttachedSCSI: device not responding, terminating.kernel: disk2s1: media is not present.kernel: disk2s2: media is not present.kernel: disk2s3: media is not present.kernel: hfs: err 6 reading VH blk (vol=Volume1)kernel: hfs: err 6 reading VH blk (vol=Volume2)kernel: hfs: err 6 reading VH blk (vol=Volume3)I've tried a couple scenarios to see what the problem is:1) Mid-2011 mac mini... 3/5 D. Was able to recover my data!!!

5/5 Anthony H (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com USB 3.0 to 3.5-Inch SATA III Hard Drive Enclosure with Fan and Upright Design (S3510BMU33B) (Personal Computers) I just ordered my second one which will be used as an external back-up to my NAS. Here's why I like this one.I was trying to recover data from a failing 1TB hard drive. Originally it was in a Windows box with XP and the drive would continually reset, cause read errors and I could not get the data off. I was able to pull maybe 10 to 20% off. I pulled the hard drive and put it into a dock and connected it to my laptop with no addition success. The drive would continue to disconnect.I dropped the drive into this dock last night, and used the Unstoppable Copier to successfully pull the data out. I don't know exactly why, but what I do know is that the hard drive would not reset or cause some of the issues. There were still read errors and some of the data is corrupted, but I was able to get all of the data off.To me it seems that this enclosure is well designed/built and fault tolerant where it can overcome drive issues and still deliver the data. Avoid the Esata model

1/5 Amazon Customer (Santa Barbara, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Enclosure w/ UASP - Trayless 3.5 inches SATA III HDD Enclosure w/ USB 3.0 or eSATA - SATA 6 Gbps - Black (Personal Computers) Beware that the esata model has no fan. It will fry your hard drive (drive climbs to over 50C). The usb only models apparently have a fan. I can't believe they left the fan out, particularly since it has double walls around the drive and virtually no ventilation. It is well known that running drives over 50C will shorten their lives. Nice box, but not for a hard drive. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2016

    Works quite well!

I needed a way to get my Plextor M5M PX-256M5M 256GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) into my ASUS N56JN-MH71 laptop. Hence, I found this special case. The mSATA SSD card fit snugly into the case's board slot and was secured with the provided screws. After replacing the case cover, it fitted nicely into the laptop's drive brace and SATA slot.Along with another 3rd party HDD caddy, I replaced the optical drive and moved the laptop's original 1 TB HDD into its place. I applied some Macrium Reflect magic (in which there's several steps involved) and I was finally able to fulfill my two-drive setup: The 256 GB SSD as the primary drive and the 1 TB HDD as my secondary drive. In my dual-boot setup of Windows 8.1 Pro and Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet:Windows 8.1: From power-on to desktop is about 12-15 seconds.Ubuntu: From power-on to desktop is about 12-13 seconds.NOTE: The above time includes quickly selecting a GRUB entry and... 5/5 Cecil Daniel (Kansas City, MO United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) No M.2 port? No problem.

5/5 Adam (Raleigh, NC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com M.2 SSD to 2.5-Inch SATA III Adapter with Protective Housing (SAT2M2NGFF25) (Personal Computers) I am using these with the Micron M600 512GB M.2 drives as the SSD doesn't seem to work in some motherboards. This drive enclosure allowed me to still put the M.2 drive to good use in the system I wanted it in. The build feels just like any other SSD, but allows you to use a few different sized M.2 drives. The speeds are like any other SSD. I was hoping I wouldn't have a problem with the enclosure being a bottleneck for the M.2 drive, and sure enough it was fine. I'd recommend it if you are looking to use an M.2 SSD in a system without an M.2 slot. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 12, 2016

Worked perfectly for me, but realize it is cheap Chinese hardware!

3/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com Dual 2.5" to 3.5" Hard Drive Bay Mounting Bracket - 2.5" to 3.5" HDD / SSD Mounting Bracket w/ SATA Power and Data cabling (Personal Computers) I like this bracket, it's going to do exactly what you want it too if you're mounting a standard 2.5" 7mm SSD.In my opinion for what it's worth, the manufacturing tolerance is just a bit on the low side so the first SSD is held snugly in place while you put the flush head screws in the bottom. Mounting the second drive opened up the bracket just a enough that I had to hold the drive in place while trying to get he round top screws with nylon washers in. I did not have a hard time with this. You must use the nylon washers for the screws for the second (top) drive are too long. Also included were four case mounting screws. It's cheap Chinese made but will do the job nicely for the price! They could include another set of flat top screws for mounting the second drive and they could do a bit better job sanding the rough edges and sharp corners but other than that, for the price, it's just what I needed. Star Tech dual 2.5 inch to 2.5 inch dual HDD mounting adapter.

5/5 critter number one (55405) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com Dual 2.5" to 3.5" Hard Drive Bay Mounting Bracket - 2.5" to 3.5" HDD / SSD Mounting Bracket w/ SATA Power and Data cabling (Personal Computers) Works great! I've got the HDD mounted and operational. Note; you'll need a power cable as this isn't provided. Instead Star Tech has provided a power split cable so; the builder can with one lead from the PSU; split one SATA power lead into two. That's a very cool idea and they have created an extremely solid power splitting cable here. And, at just six inches long it won't take up a lot of space in the tower.I like the fact that multiple mounting positions were provided for mounting the adapter into the tower so; I was able to mount this adapter in the tower with it sitting upright on my desk. Admittedly the ideal position for putting the screws in is flat on a table on a towel but I was feeling lazy and with the extra 1/2 inch of wiggle room I was able to pull it off just fine. My tower was a little on the inexpensive side and as such I didn't get a perfectly aligned back screw but it isn't coming back out without a fight and I'm confident I have it in there real tight. Visually and electr[on]ically these make a nice presentation. I put in my Samsung SSDs and the top bay ate my drive. Disassembling the unit, I found that the lever arm pushing out the drive would slide over the top of the drive. decent product but may require fixes/modifications for certain cases.

I actually like this product, but it does have a few flaws. I think if the manufacturer can fix these flaws, it would be an awesome product. That said, I'm not one to shy away from doing a little "customization" with my dremel tool. Here are some details about the flaws:1. the PCI bracket that fits in the opening at the rear of your PC case is a little too wide on the "short" end of the "L" bracket. Specifically, about 1mm too wide on the side opposite the notch for the hold down screw. some cases expect the bracket to meet standards and have an upright tab that is meant to hold the "short" end of the "L" bracket in place. if your case has this, this product's PCI L-bracket will not fit or you have to cut off 1mm. I used a rotary tool with a cut-off wheel to do this.2. the side of this product that is meant to sit on top of the electrical PCI-E slot has brackets to assist in holding it in place, specifically there's a... 3/5 TheOG (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Mobility

Bought it for mobility of my bixgox HDD. I've converted my bigbox to a 1TB, 2.5 inch HDD - the Seagate Hybrid SSHD. I like being able to remove my HDD and take it with me when traveling. Convenient if I need anything on it, and it's not left behind for potential home break-ins while I'm away.Only issue I have with this is the HDD temp when mounted in the bigbox. Inside this enclosure, and mounted in my bigbox, my HDD was hitting 44C-47C consistently. I'm more comfortable with 35C-38C. I'm not a gamer. The occassional use as a USB 3.0 external on my laptop didn't get warm at all. Only reason I held it to 4 stars is ventilation. It has none.I recommend this arrangement except for temp, but actually the temps I experienced are really not that bad.
