Doesn't seem to handle 7200rpm drives

Got two of these things just a few days ago, and had some feedback on the start-up experience that I wanted to share. The enclosures were unable to spin up two of the three models of drive I tried in them. I'll probably keep them to use with the drives that worked, but that early experience was not exactly confidence-inspiring.INSTALLATIONInstallation is pretty straightforward, and largely covered by other reviewers. After removing the side of the enclosure, you have to slide the drive into the enclosure, then toward the back to seat into the SATA connector. The fit is tight enough that on multiple occasions I discovered I hadn't slid the drive into the enclosure all the way, so it would slide over the top of the SATA connector instead of seating into it. This can be a little hard to detect, as depending on the height of the drive the enclosure may still be able to close.I also have an old Icy Dock MB664US-1SB USB 2.0/eSATA enclosure, which has a... 2/5 nordic - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Partitions not visible on existing 512e 4TB drives, due to sector emulation for Windows XP

The device appears to be well made, but does not fully support dealing with large drives such as 4TB and up that have already been formatted in a PC. My drive works just fine on SATA, but when put into this enclosure, Linux detects the drive incorrectly and claims there are no partitions on it.I did some research on the problem, and it seems like many enclosures, including this one, implement some kind of sector emulation feature, so that large drives will work with Windows XP. This sector emulation causes the sectors to be numbered differently from the partition table, and your existing drive is not readable. You can reformat it, and it will work in the enclosure, but if you pull the drive out of the enclosure and put it into a PC, it will fail again since the sector emulation is no longer occuring. I didn't want to have to backup and restore 4TB of data. Here is an article which describes this further:... 2/5 Wayne - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Four years and still working!

I noticed I never left a review for this hard disk enclosure until now, but I have been so happy with it I wanted to add one now.I purchased my StarTech 3.5in SuperSpeed USB 3.0 SATA enclosure back in January of 2013. I wanted to move the internal Hitachi 2TB 7200 rpm hard drive that came inside my Dell 27 (2710) AIO PC outside. The Dell 27 2710 AIO is an all-in-one PC with only one internal HD drive bay and I wanted to swap out the mechanical hard drive with a 256GB 2.5 SSD drive. The 32GB msata pci card inside wasn’t large enough to hold Windows 8 and my software. Before I used the StarTech, I had purchased another brand enclosure from Amazon that failed with frequent disconnect. Since my user and data folders were located on the mechanical hard drive, the disconnect would cause me to lose my desktop, and freeze up when saving large Photoshop and Lightroom files. Downloading and transferring large files would also abort with errors and file... 5/5 Amazon Customer (CT USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
