Hard Drive, A Family's Fight Against Three Countries

Creator: Mary Todd | True Crime - 2014-08-01

This story, which is told from the unique perspective of Shane’s mother, Mary, recounts the family’s painful, arduous, and unwavering endeavor to reveal the truth about what happened to Shane Todd in Singapore.

Publisher: Morgan James Publishing

About this book
On June 24, 2012, Dr. Shane Truman Todd, a young American engineer, was found hanging in his Singapore apartment, just a week before his scheduled return to the United States. Although Shane had repeatedly expressed apprehension about his work with a Chinese company and fear his life was being threatened, authorities immediately ruled his death a suicide. His family initially didn’t know what to believe. However, upon arriving in Singapore, they realized the evidence suggested not suicide, but murder. Shane’s family later discovered that what they thought was a computer speaker was actually an external hard drive with thousands of files from Shane’s computer. The information in those files transformed this story from a tragic suicide to an international saga of mystery, deceit, and cover-up, involving three countries. “Hard Drive: A Families Fight against Three Countries” is the captivating story of Shane’s mysterious death and his family’s grueling battle to reveal the truth against powerful forces that have sought to conceal, destroy, or discredit evidence indicating homicide. This story, which is told from the unique perspective of Shane’s mother, Mary, recounts the family’s painful, arduous, and unwavering endeavor to reveal the truth about what happened to Shane Todd in Singapore.

    DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

WD Passport drives have always been reliable, excellent drives and I've owned several without any issues, but this new version is very disappointing for 2 key reasons:1) The included software is incredibly tricky to disable if you don't want to use it. You have to go to WD's website and download new hardware and software drivers. I am relative tech-savvy, but it took me 90 minutes to finally get the drive ready to drag and drop files over to it. I almost gave up..I should have.2) New mini USB cable is VERY unstable. The slightest touch, and I mean just barely touching the cable while the drive is connected to your USB port, will disconnect the drive from your computer. The problem lies with the mini USB connection where it connects to the drive itself.I could have lived with reason 1, as I overcame it and my frustrations would have subsided, but reason 2 makes the drive simply unusable. I am returning it to Amazon.WD management - you are... 1/5 JREV (Ambler, PA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) unacceptable

i bought three of this new model and was planning to put a bunch of family pictures on them and give them to my parents for christmas.unfortunately i was a victim of false advertising : this is not a plug-and-play drive.WD, what are you thinking ? When I plug in my hard drive i certainly don't want a CD volume automatically appearing under My Computer in addition to the actual hard drive volume.Because of this "Virtual CD" nonsense, Windows launches the "New Hardware Assistant" each time I plug in my drive! Here is what WD has to say about "The Virtual CD" :"" A small portion of drive space on your new My Passport or My Book hard drive has been used to create a Virtual CD (VCD). The VCD contains the WD SmartWare installation software, the encryption and password protection application, User Manuals, and other resource files. The VCD looks like an actual CD volume and appears on the screen each time you connect your WD drive to the... 1/5 Stephan Baishanski (Paris, France) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2009

Hate it, wish I hadn't assumed latest model would be better than previous

I did research for a while on hard drives, and the previous model received generally positive reviews, so I finally decided to go for it and order one. Then I noticed the 'a newer model of this item is available' link, and clicked on it. Assumption; the newer model would just be an updated model of the previous. Now, I do not lay claim to a really high level of technical understanding of computers and processes, but I know enough to know that when your laptop crashes the first 3 times you try to connect your new external hard drive, there's a problem. At first I assumed that it was maybe a clash between the hard drive and my virus software, because it can be a little temperamental the first time it sees a new program, and when it did eventually install I began a back up. The back up just stopped after about half an hour; the cord fell out of the back of the drive. I plugged it back in, and the light on the drive came back on, but the back up wouldn't resume. I've tried several times... 1/5 A. Andrew (NY, USA) - See all my reviews, October 4, 2009

    Bundled Software Unremoveable!

Ok so here's the deal. WD used to sell ordinary hard drives. Good prices. Decent reliability. Just hard drives like everyone else. I own two of the earlier generation 500GB drives and I love them. That was then. Now they think they're "adding value" by including software on the drive for backup and whatnot.Fine.On the 1TB drive, my Mac says over 660 MB is being used for this. You can not erase this data. It appears as a "virtual" CD on the Mac Desktop. The hardware inside the drive protects this virtual CD from being altered in any way.You can run Disk Utility all you want. It won't remove it.WD says it's being "green" by including this on the HD and not a CD.Fine. Admirable. After a lot of customer uproar, they released a utility to HIDE the partition. But you don't get your space back. This partition by the way can "update itself" over the internet.Scared yet?Right now, if you want... 3/5 nicdnyc (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A good external drive with a few annoyances

The series of next-generation My Passport (including My Passport SE high capacity versions) drives from WD that have just come out seem to getting a bad rap. The bone of contention is based on two aspects. One is the new micro-USB connector and the second is the WD SmartWare backup & control software that mounts a second drive when you plug these things into your computer.I wavered endlessly after looking at all the bad reviews despite being interested in getting these. In the end, I decided to purchase both a 500 GB and 750 GB model to see for myself. If the product would be unusable, I could simply return it back.Firstly, the SmartWare. It automatically installs a second drive and it apparently cannot be removed or disabled. However, the software does not take up a lot of space. The capacity on the My Passport SE is 697 GB (750 GB formatted, NTFS), and the SmartWare takes up 569 MB if you right-click your mouse and check the drive's properties. That is less... 4/5 M. Sheet!!!

If I could give the d*mned thing negative stars, I would.I purchased this to back up an aging computer whose hard drive was just about maxed out. I had planned on storing my big files (photos, music) on it until I'd purchased a new computer. Then, I'd transfer everything from the Passport to the new computer and life would be wonderful.Good thing I tried to transfer files to a laptop before I did anything irreparable. The d*mned thing won't allow me to download to a different computer!!! I can return files to where they originally lived, but that doesn't do me an ounce of good with a hard drive that's burst its seams.I downloaded updated software. I fiddled. Then, in a last ditch attempt, I called WD support. They put me thru the same paces I'd already done on my own. Still no communication with "alien" computers.AFTER NINETY MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH WD TECH SUPPORT THE REP FINALLY ADVISED ME TO GIVE UP AND INSTEAD DOWNLOAD DATA... 1/5 Anon (Sitting In Front Of My Computer) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
