About this book
The hard disk drive is one of the finest examples of the precision control of mechatronics, with tolerances less than one micrometer achieved while operating at high speed. Increasing demand for higher data density as well as disturbance-prone operating environments continue to test designers' mettle. Explore the challenges presented by modern hard disk drives and learn how to overcome them with Hard Disk Drive: Mechatronics and Control.Beginning with an overview of hard disk drive history, components, operating principles, and industry trends, the authors thoroughly examine the design and manufacturing challenges. They start with the head positioning servomechanism followed by the design of the actuator servo controller, the critical aspects of spindle motor control, and finally, the servo track writer, a critical technology in hard disk drive manufacturing. By comparing various design approaches for both single- and dual-stage servomechanisms, the book shows the relative pros and cons of each approach. Numerous examples and figures clarify and illustrate the discussion.Exploring practical issues such as models for plants, noise reduction, disturbances, and common problems with spindle motors, Hard Disk Drive: Mechatronics and Control avoids heavy theory in favor of providing hands-on insight into real issues facing designers every day.

    A Cheap, but Decent Solution

This is a great solution if you need some cheap, external enclosures that use USB 3 that are very easy to swap out drives. These use no screws at all. The entire bottom slides off like a large remote control battery lid. Very, very handy if you have to run through a lot of drives, erasing, reformatting and laying down an OS. It takes like five seconds to trade the installed drive for another. The cord is USB 3, but whether it actually runs properly at that standard is an unknown to me right now. I will test that later. All I know right now is that I have several easy to set up drive enclosures to use USB 3 with an internal 2.5" SATA drive. They have a soft-touch surface, very lightly rubberized over the plastic. They look very nice. They have a very small pin-hole-type blue LED I/O light. The cord is about a foot long. For the price and the free Prime Shipping you cannot go wrong if you need one of these. I liked my pair so much that I bought another two days after I received the... 5/5 Pachyderm - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) well designed and easy to install

4/5 Amazon Customer (New York USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: [USB 3.0 & Tool-free ] Inateck USB 3.0 HDD SATA External Hard Drive Disk Enclosure Case for 9.5mm 7mm 2.5 Inch SATA HDD and SSD(FE2004) (Personal Computers) Used to repurpose old 2.5" 200gb Seagate harddrive (9.5 mm) prior to disposing of my old laptop. Lightweight, well designed and easy to install. For only $10, this is a cost-effective way to add some additional portable storage.UPDATE: Tested this enclosure with a new Samsung 850 EVO SSD which was purchased subsequent to this review and was disappointed with read/write speeds of only 150 MB/s as compared to the Sabrent 2.5mm enclosure that I purchased with the SSD, which was almost 3x as fast with the same SSD in the 1GB Crystal Disk Mark test. However, this enclosure is still great for the 9.5mm harddrive I am using it with but would recommend a different enclosure if you are planning on using this for a SSD (in which case, I would recommend you looking for a slimmer (and faster) 7mm enclosure. A great peripheral with a really awful user manual

Received this as a gift off my wishlist. This drive enclosure is an attractive addition to my desk, and when it is properly recognized by Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise' (see cons), it performs quite well, offering blazing speeds up to 135MB/sec per Roadkil's Disk Speed test.Pros:* Easy hardware setup -- attach the brackets to the front of the drives, plug them into their slots, close the case* Attractive, sleek case with blue indicator lights (one each per drive, fan speed, interface, etc.)* Power cable has 90° bend for security (it's on the side, which may seem like a con, but really, it keeps it from being tugged out unexpectedly)* Offers (but see cons)... offers two interface types (eSATA 6GB and USB 3.0)* Supports read speeds as fast as my hard drives attain when inside the computer (134.99 MB/sec). 2014 Nov update: a WD 4.0TB Purple-series drive installed in this device has attained 150MB/sec sustained write with an SSD as its... 5/5 Photoleif (colorado, usa) - See all my reviews This review is from: Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 4 Bay 3.5" SATA HDD Enclosure - USB 3.0 & eSATA Support SATA 3 6.0Gbps HDD transfer speed (Personal Computers) Received this as a gift off my wishlist. Installing the drive into the enclosure was pretty simple, just screw the handle onto the front ...

Mediasonic makes these in several different models. They have the NON-Raid version, and the Raid version of the 4 bay enclosure. The only difference is, the hardware Raid version allows you to create an array using the box itself. The NON-Raid version won't have the hardware to do it, however, if connected to a Windows or MAC, you can use software to create your raid array in the enclosure. I only mention this to be thorough, as I have no interest in Raid. When my Western Digital Black 2TB 7200 RPM SATA III drive was in a Windows machine, I partitioned it into two, with each partition being 1TB each, actual size around 950GB. Installing the drive into the enclosure was pretty simple, just screw the handle onto the front of the drive, pop the bay doors open, luckily we didn't need HAL to do that for us. Remove the pressure plate, stick the drive in, replace pressure plate, close the bay doors. Plug in your USB cable or ESATA cable, plug in the power and go.I feel... 5/5 Arthur Senior (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Solid via USB2.0, picky w/USB3.0 compatibility, untested via eSATA

I imagine this kind of product basically has two use cases - a budget RAID case for video production, or aggregating a few drives for backup/media serving. I'll address the former, then the latter.Note: I tested the Probox using an early 2009 Mac Pro, with OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3, via the Mac's built-in USB2.0 and an add-in PCI-E x1 Fresco Logic FL1009 USB3.0 card. Transfers were tested using an internal SSD, with a mix of 5900rpm and 7200rpm 1tb/1.5tb disks in the Probox. Also, Mediasonic states in their forums that Proboxes made on or before early 2012 have known issues with the built-in USB 3.0 on newer Macs. Mine was built in 2013, so I do not *think* this applies to this particular box.I wouldn't recommend the Probox for a professional workflow, at least not via USB3.0. Transfer rates are very erratic; 90-100mB/sec for smaller files (copying from the SSD), and similarly high for the first few hundred megabytes of larger (multi-gigabyte) files. However,... 3/5 Tu Nguyen - See all my reviews, June 21, 2013

Bought for Xbox one and 3TB Seagate HDD

I have owned Vantec Nexstar enclosures in the past and this just as well built. Plenty of ventilation for heat dissipation in an aluminum casing. The it comes with silver screws used to secure the hard drive in the the bay (1 will be extra) and black screws to match the outer casing also will have one extra screw. The hard drives slides into the bay the ninto the sata connector. then you use the silver screws to keep the drive stable. Then you slide the bay into the casing and secure that with the provided black screws. It has a USB 3.0 cable and power adapter. The back has an off/on switch. It includes small vertical stand or you can lay the drive flat. It has a bright blue light that shows hard drive activity. I attached this to an xbox one as the June 2014 update allows games to be installed onto external storage, as longas the drive/enclosure supports USB 3.0 and hard drives greater than 256GB. I attached it, went through the Xbox One's prompts and it was formatted and ready for... 5/5 Aaron M. Brown (Georgia) - See all my reviews, June 13, 2014
