Hard Drive, A Family's Fight Against Three Countries

Creator: Mary Todd | True Crime - 2014-08-01

This story, which is told from the unique perspective of Shane’s mother, Mary, recounts the family’s painful, arduous, and unwavering endeavor to reveal the truth about what happened to Shane Todd in Singapore.

Publisher: Morgan James Publishing

About this book
On June 24, 2012, Dr. Shane Truman Todd, a young American engineer, was found hanging in his Singapore apartment, just a week before his scheduled return to the United States. Although Shane had repeatedly expressed apprehension about his work with a Chinese company and fear his life was being threatened, authorities immediately ruled his death a suicide. His family initially didn’t know what to believe. However, upon arriving in Singapore, they realized the evidence suggested not suicide, but murder. Shane’s family later discovered that what they thought was a computer speaker was actually an external hard drive with thousands of files from Shane’s computer. The information in those files transformed this story from a tragic suicide to an international saga of mystery, deceit, and cover-up, involving three countries. “Hard Drive: A Families Fight against Three Countries” is the captivating story of Shane’s mysterious death and his family’s grueling battle to reveal the truth against powerful forces that have sought to conceal, destroy, or discredit evidence indicating homicide. This story, which is told from the unique perspective of Shane’s mother, Mary, recounts the family’s painful, arduous, and unwavering endeavor to reveal the truth about what happened to Shane Todd in Singapore.

Hard Drive, Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire

Creator: James Wallace, Jim Erickson | Business & Economics - 1993-06-01

Chronicles the career of "Chairman Bill" Gates, the computer whiz kid who commands the powerful Microsoft computer software empire.

Publisher: Harper Collins

About this book
The true story behind the rise of a tyrannical genius, how he transformed an industry, and why everyone is out to get him.In this fascinating exposé, two investigative reporters trace the hugely successful career of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Part entrepreneur, part enfant terrible, Gates has become the most powerful -- and feared -- player in the computer industry, and arguably the richest man in America. In Hard Drive, investigative reporters Wallace and Erickson follow Gates from his days as an unkempt thirteen-year-old computer hacker to his present-day status as a ruthless billionaire CEO. More than simply a "revenge of the nerds" story though, this is a balanced analysis of a business triumph, and a stunningly driven personality. The authors have spoken to everyone who knows anything about Bill Gates and Microsoft -- from childhood friends to employees and business rivals who reveal the heights, and limits, of his wizardry. From Gates's singular accomplishments to his equally extraordinary brattiness, arrogance, and hostility (the atmosphere is so intense at Microsoft that stressed-out programmers have been known to ease the tension of their eighty-hour workweeks by exploding homemade bombs), this is a uniquely revealing glimpse of the person who has emerged as the undisputed king of a notoriously brutal industry.

    Good, practical desktop drive

I gave this drive to someone as a gift, and they've been using it for backups for 10 months without issue. My review is based on another unit of this drive which I bought for myself some months later. I've been using it as my primary desktop OS/programs drive since 5/29/2014, so it's about 5 months now. There have been no problems thus far. It's really quite a bargain for desktop use if 1TB is all you need. The actual capacity of this drive is 931.5GB. That's an old marketing trick which can be blamed for the pointless redefinition of all our real, long established data measurements with those silly "i" characters. I won't dwell on it any further, but 931GB is the true capacity when measured in base 2, as all data is correctly measured. This 1TB Blue drive uses a single 1TB platter spinning at 7200rpm. There are 2 heads (each side is 500GB).A single platter design is usually better for reliability than having multiple smaller platters, because... 5/5 m6502 (California, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Sorry I waited so long to get a large storage drive like this.

Worth every cent. I had been putting off buying a much larger stroage drive. Finally got one now I can store much more for much longer, get bulk files off of my work drives etc. This drive is a storage drive, not a performace drive. I use it to store files, movies etc. For gaming, and the such, I either use my SSD or my WD BLACK hard Drive. I am glad I picked this up, I have not had a single issue with it, and it has freed me up to do more with my other drives as I no longer have to have them filled up with large files I rarely use. Below are the color codes for WD drives. I do not know how different their performance are from one to another or if it is all marketing, but here it is.BLUE = Solid performance and reliability for everyday computing.BLACK = Maximum performance for power computing.RED = Increased workloads and reliability.PURPLE = Designed for Surveillance DVR storage.GOLD = WD Gold HDD is designed for Serversand some of you mentioned... 5/5 Red - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) XBOX ONE USE? You Better Believe it.

I had recently purchased an external hard drive case that is usb 3.0 and I used an old Seagate 1TB Barracuda I had laying around to expand my sons hard drive on his xbox one. Unfortunately the old seagate didnt stand a chance...It worked for a few weeks and then I got the dreaded TICK TICK TICK noise...hard drive platter was ruined...Not sure what happened. Anyway, I already had the 3.0 enclosure with fan so I opted to get another bare hard drive to install in there. I have always had Seagates and to be honest this is the first that has failed me. But it is indeed 8 years old. I installed the new WD in the enclosure in less than 2 minutes and plugged it in. I formatted it for xbox one and installed his games there. We played a few games and everything works like a charm. With the 6GB transfer rate I dont think its going to be an issue. Granted this is day one. I write a ton of reviews so I will be back to let you know if there is any changes in the hard drive.PRICE: For what I... 5/5 Steven Housden (Herrin, Illinois) - See all my reviews, July 3, 2015

    Working as intended for PS4.

I bought the 2TB version and it does work with the PS4 (current version 4.50). At first it said it didn't support it but after I restarted my PS4 it worked. Currently works as intended. There's 1.84TB usable after formatting. It took 19 minutes to transfer 3 games (118.3 GB) over from the internal hard drive to this external hard drive. Will update if anything arises.Edit: It had been a little over two months and its still working as intended. To answer a common question:It works out of the box. Literally just plug it into your ps4 go to devices under settings then USB storage devices. It should pop up under there, select it then it will say "Format as extended storage" and select that. The support for external hard drives is absolutely great. If you have a TON of downloadable games then you can simply just have multiple external hard drives and download all you games to them. Then you can just plug in the external hard drive with the game you want and you're... 5/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Working, but beware of bad sectors; always keep backups!

I received this drive 8 months ago and it is still working in an acceptable manner by my standards. For more details, please continue reading.Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents... 4/5 Milos Ivanovic (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Died during backup after less than 2 hours.

I was pleased to initially get this backup HDD, it is small, portable, clean design, with a nice black color. It was packed in an easy to open and protective box and the basic instructions were simple and clear, plug the HDD into your computer with the accompanying cord and download the Seagate Dashboard application to begin backing up. I did just that, and initially seemed to be up to a great start. The Dashboard app isn't fancy, but appeared to be sufficient to get the job done. However, fast forward about 2 hours to ~80% backed up, and the HDD starts to occasionally beep. I was not aware the drive had any speakers so inititally I figured I had heard something outside my house. Gradually over the next 10 minutes the beeping became more and more frequent until it was obvious they were coming from the drive and were coming out about every second. I also noticed at this point the drive was no longer backing up. Sequential Writes/Reads Faster Than 2015 Model, Excellent Drive, New Case Design Not An Improvement

This model is the latest generation of the many My Passport drives I've owned or purchased for clients. They have proven reliable and good performers. They have incrementally improved with each new generation. This model features a new case design which most notably replaced the rounded corners with sharp 90 degree ones. Otherwise it should have little effect on use.BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient):The new model is a little bit faster than last year's and includes the 4TB model added to the previous generation My Passport Ultra early in 2016. This model (I got the 4TB size) is just noticeably faster than the 2015 model on sequential reads and but especially writes using Crystal DiskMark. This My Passport has a new design that replaces rounded corners with pointy ones and adds some odd (to me) styling to the case. The new case shows fingerprints and scratches much more than the old. It's a purely aesthetic change. Other than outward appearance it's... 5/5 Stephanie Sullivan (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews, October 14, 2016

Modern Split Look with Vibrant colors !!

Look: I first thought that this hard drive is little big to carry but No, I was wrong. It looks like this but in actual it has same size as WD passport. Only difference is it has square shape while WD passport has round corners.Working: This WD Hard drive is pretty good in transfer data time. Similar as WD passport. It takes pretty decent time to transfer data like videos, photos, etc. Means not slow, this is exactly what it should be.Color: This is available in many colors. I ordered Red and this red is typical Red. Little kiddish color. If you want decent one only go with Black. As this hard disk colors are very vibrant, not decent.Quality: No doubt outer layer is not as good as WD passport. But not that bad also as Some reviewers mentioned that the outer layer has cheap plastic. I don’t think so. This is a hard drive, not a toy you would play with. And thus I did not find any issue with quality.Overall this is a 5* Hard Drive. Don’t... 5/5 Shan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
