Top-bar Beekeeping, Organic Practices for Honeybee Health

Creator: Les Crowder, Heather Harrell | Nature - 2012

In Top-Bar Beekeeping, authors Les Crowder and Heather Harrell guide you through the specifics of this innovative approach to hive management, including raising queens, harvesting and processing honey and beeswax, and planting for ...

Publisher: Chelsea Green Publishing

About this book
In recent years beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests such as varroa and tracheal mites and from the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs.More and more organically minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a topbar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers.Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free."Top-Bar Beekeeping" provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

Freakonomics, A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

Creator: Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner | Business & Economics - 2011-09-20

Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist.

Publisher: HarperCollins

About this book
Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? How much do parents really matter? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life--from cheating and crime to parenting and sports--and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives--how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

Las Vegas Noir

Creator: Jarret Keene, Todd James Pierce | Fiction - 2008

In this chilling portrait of America's Sin City, lady luck is just as likely to dispense cold hard cash as a cold-hearted killing.

Publisher: Akashic Books

About this book
Launched by the summer '04 award-winning bestseller Brooklyn Noir, Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies. Each book is comprised of all-new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book. In this chilling portrait of America's Sin City, lady luck is just as likely to dispense cold hard cash as a cold-hearted killing. Brand-new stories by: John O’Brien, David Corbett, Scott Phillips, Nora Pierce, Bliss Esposito, Felicia Campbell, Jaq Greenspon, José Skinner, Pablo Medina, Christine McKellar, Lori Kozlowski, Vu Tran, Celeste Starr, Preston L. Allen, Tod Goldberg, and Janet Berliner. ?? Las Vegas provides the classic sophistication and darkness necessary for a deadly noir story. Stylish, sultry, brimming with ambition and greed, the characters that populate this literary Las Vegas are pushed to the extremes of human experience. From the neon glitter of the Strip to the treacherous views of Red Rock Canyon and Boulder City, from the desperation of Naked City to the racial tensions of the Westside, no other location offers so many different avenues leading to serious trouble.   Many legendary authors have turned their attention to Vegas to investigate the city's moods and mysteries. Now, the most recent crop of acclaimed writers explore the secret neighborhoods and byways of America's most sinful city, offering readers not only compelling noir tales but also an insider's understanding of this steamy oasis. These authors take readers beneath the surface flash of Freemont Street and the Strip and into the gritty multicultural environs of underground Vegas. Jarret Keene is author/editor of three books, including the poetry collection Monster Fashion, the alt-travel tome The Underground Guide to Las Vegas, and the unauthorized rock bio The Killers: Destiny Is Calling Me. He lives in Las Vegas. Todd James Pierce is the author of three books, including the novel A Woman of Stone and the short story collection Newsworld, which won the 2006 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. He is an assistant professor of English at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, California.??

If you need a NAS for your home, buy this one!

For those not familiar with exactly what this product is:This is NOT an external hard drive. It is much more than that. If you need an external hard drive, this will not work for you. This is basically a 4 TB file server, or NAS (Network Attached Storage). You attach it to your network via an Ethernet (CAT5e/6) cable. Plug it into your wireless router or a hub/switch on your network. The box says "Access your files wirelessly!". That's a little misleading. There is no wifi on this. That just means that computers on your network that are connected wirelessly can access it. Lame, but whatever.Let me just address the complaints from other reviews:About "Slowness":First you should probably read the manual. It defaults to "Power Saver Mode" which puts the hard drives to "sleep" after a specified idle time. So if your hard drives are "sleeping" there will be some lag in you initial access time. Some clients view this as "disconnected". So if you... 4/5 P. Easter - See all my reviews, July 11, 2012

Great Concept - Dangerously Unstable Execution

I have had the 6GB Duo for about three weeks now. Though I love the concept, the instability of the system is cause for alarm. Below is a detailed review:THE GOOD:(+) Great Concept(+) Online Access(+) Mobile Apps(+) Large Space(+) RAID redundancy (or so I thought - see THE UGLY below)The concept is great - a personal cloud with fast speed, online secure access, mobile viewing through some nice iOS and Android apps, lots of space, the actual drives are WD Green drives (I have had many and none have failed to date) and the security of Raid 1 redundancy over two 3TB drives. Should one of the drives fail, in less than 5 minutes either drive can be easily removed and replaced (using a matching drive - an easily found and inexpensive WD Green 3TB drive).I own a photography studio where we run a four-machine PC network. Very good little NAS at a decent price with the ability to access from anywhere

The WD MyCloud Mirror is a fairly powerful albeit small storage system (two disk bays). The unit I have is the 4Tb version. I also have a WD MyCloud EX2 and the main difference between this model and the EX2 is that this model uses cheaper NAS hard drives, not the Western Digital Red drives the EX2 comes with (which in my opinion are far better drives).Initial setup is very simple. Just attach it to your router and go through some questions. If you want to dig deeper however there are a whole host of options available to you including which system you want for your drives (it defaults to RAID 1 but you can set it to striped if you prefer more disk space at the expense of the auto backup).Digging deeper into the options the MyCloud Mirror gives you, you can turn on media server capabilities (Twonky which is a DNLA application that works well), cloud access (this basically means you can access the device from anywhere and there are a few apps you can download for... 5/5 Colin Brown "Colin Brown Microsoft MVP" (Birmingham, Alabama, USA) - See all my reviews, May 6, 2014

I am going to stay away from the true tech part of this review because others have done it much better than I ever could and I don't want to confuse anyone. What is this? Basically it's a massive storage option you hook up to your router and can be accessed by anyone on the network. You can set up individual folders which can be password protected for individuals and you can also have public folders where people can share music/movies/or files. This is all aided by Western Digital suite of software that can be downloaded from their site. It's easy to download and for the most part intuitive to use. I would have liked to see more tutorials for setup and optimization though.Set up out of the box is very easy. Connect to the router and power supply, download the software and you're good to go. It's really that simple. It's useful to have in case you want to share files, but also for redundant backup of important files, pictures, etc. Extra... 4/5 Andy Gray "Beezer Review" (Minnesota) - See all my reviews This review is from: WD My Cloud Mirror 4TB 2-bay Personal Cloud Storage - All your files saved twice. I'd prefer the EX2, but this is identical except for the reason I'd prefer the EX2

Note, I use both a synology drive and a home brew linux nas on a home rack server. What is a NAS? Network Accessible Storage. You can think of it as 'smart hard drive' or 'dumb computer with a big hard drive' that is on your home network that only stores data. It has it's own processor and operating system so it it is stand alone. Or for those that know what the cloud is, it is a stripped down home cloud solution.First to note, I poured over the specification and reviews of this and the EX2 because they seemed identical. Well they are, WD has become the mass market for entry level NAS now.The problem is they are not, this does not use the WD Red drives which are their NAS drives. Implementing a NAS storage solution, the whole point is the ability to rebuild and recover from errors (in addition to all the other consumer features). Data integrity is why most people spend a lot of money, not really so they can access their home photos over the... 4/5 B. Holmes - See all my reviews, June 12, 2014

Bad reviews are real - file I/O performance slows over time

I won't re-hash what others have said, but the drive I/O performance (or lack thereof) is a real problem - especially with Time Machine.I have this device hard-wired into my router (Gb connection) and my MacBook Pro is also hard-wired into the same router. My initial Time Machine backup went with reasonable speed, but subsequent, incremental updates to the drive started dragging. I found that if I reboot the WD MyBook Live, it works better for a period of time, but then slows down. With wired, Gb networking end-to-end the Time Machine performance should be on par with my 800Mb Firewire portable drive, but it's not even close. Even just copying files via the Mac Finder over the (wired) network to the drive is agonizingly slow. That said, however, their iPhone app and web-based access tools are some of the best I've seen from this product category, so I will keep the device and see if things improve with a future software update; hence the 3 stars... 3/5 Kenneth F. Bad Reviews Don't Reflect Latest Software

I found the product I got to be way better than the reviews indicated. The main reason seems to be software updates. You should really ignore any complaints you read about the device from 2010, and a lot of them from 2011. The physical hardware is just a basic drive with a processor and a network connection. What makes a difference is the software - both on the drive, and the mybooklive website/iphone apps. Most of the complaints I was worried about turned out to have been fixed in the latest software. For example: A review complained about iTunes media sharing being broken by the latest iTunes update - I had no problem doing iTunes media sharing with the latest iTunes. A review complained about the Mio-net connectivity - This device no longer uses Mio-net.The mybooklive website lets you map your home mybook live drive as a network drive from any computer away from home. Works great for Sonos..

Yesterday I purchased one of these drives to use as a Network Attached Storage drive for my Sonos music system. This drive is perfect for that setup and exceeded my expectations. The setup for this drive is a snap. My PC and Sonos system recognized it with zero issues. The drive throughput is about 70Mb/s which is plenty for my purposes. Also (and a key feature for Sonos), this drive will spin down after inactivity and will even let you set how long it waits before spinning down (have not seen any other drive in this price range which will do that). Also, this drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system so no reformatting is needed like with most external drives. Having a drive with NAS capabilities is excellent because you need less hardware to make the drive available to Sonos. Lastly, because the drive doesn't have an on/off switch, you won't have to worry if you lose power that you'll have to turn this back on (like with the old Linksys NSLU2).The only reason I... 4/5 Thomas B Goodloe "Berkeley Goodloe" (Richmond, VA United States) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2010

Some technical tips on this great drive for Windows Vista or Windows 7, very big and reliable and inexpensive

[Updated this review on 28-Jun-2011]I have purchased 4 of these Western Digital Studio II external hard drives over the past 18 months (three of them are 4TB, one of them is 6TB), and they are great. The first 3 of these I bought have been chugging along with constant use for more than a year, with nary a hiccup. I just purchased the 6TB model about a week ago, and it looks identical to the 4TB models -- I have high hopes for it as well. For some context: In the past, I purchased 2 Iomega external drives and 4 LaCie external drives, and ALL of those external drives completely failed after a few months of use, while connected to 3 different computers. Unbelievable! But these Western Digital Studio II drives are a dream. They keep going and going...These Western Digital Studio II drives have a choice of 4 different interfaces (USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and eSATA), and I've used them with all of the interfaces. I've also used them on... 5/5 Randy Forgaard "enthusiastic haunter" (New Hampshire, USA) - See all my reviews, June 21, 2011

    Not best for Intel Macs

I purchased this drive to go along with my intel mac. I was previously a happy lacie owner, but since WD came in at such a great price and was listed as great with macs, I went for it.What a mistake. For the first month, it worked well... a bit slower than my lacie, but still worked. Then, all of the sudden, it began to dismount itself from my computer. I am currently using Lightroom to edit my work, and when the drive would fail, Lightroom would loose the catalog. When you have 500+ images to edit and the drive dismounts every 45 minutes, this can become a huge issue. So, I did some further research and found out that several other intel mac users are having the same issue with this product. This is very frustrating as it is advertised 'for your mac'. Most of the other posters mentioned that the drive worked well for about a month and then started having issues.I called WD, and their customer service department was actually very helpful. high performance, 5 year warranty, self-rebuilding raid mirror

If you want the best performance, you would want to use it as eSATA. This would mean a cardbus or expresscard eSATA adaptor on a laptop, for example. But here is the one star that I have taken off: at this price, it still does not come with an eSATA cable! It has cables for USB and the 1394, but no eSATA. I have not had the chance to test it in eSATA because of the cable. The USB2 speed is good enough for my archival application. I've also read around and eSATA is not faster than USB2 by much in real life (maybe 25MB/s vs 30MB/s).The 5 year warranty is industry standard and is reassuring. And by the time it's up, you will want a larger storage anyway. :P But you must keep in mind that that if the controller in the enclosure dies, your whole array dies. Hopefully the controller didn't write bogus information into your harddrives and then hopefully WD will be able to ship you a new enclosure and you can recover that way.
