Top-bar Beekeeping, Organic Practices for Honeybee Health

Creator: Les Crowder, Heather Harrell | Nature - 2012

In Top-Bar Beekeeping, authors Les Crowder and Heather Harrell guide you through the specifics of this innovative approach to hive management, including raising queens, harvesting and processing honey and beeswax, and planting for ...

Publisher: Chelsea Green Publishing

About this book
In recent years beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests such as varroa and tracheal mites and from the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs.More and more organically minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a topbar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers.Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free."Top-Bar Beekeeping" provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

Freakonomics, A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

Creator: Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner | Business & Economics - 2011-09-20

Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist.

Publisher: HarperCollins

About this book
Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? How much do parents really matter? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life--from cheating and crime to parenting and sports--and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives--how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

Las Vegas Noir

Creator: Jarret Keene, Todd James Pierce | Fiction - 2008

In this chilling portrait of America's Sin City, lady luck is just as likely to dispense cold hard cash as a cold-hearted killing.

Publisher: Akashic Books

About this book
Launched by the summer '04 award-winning bestseller Brooklyn Noir, Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies. Each book is comprised of all-new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book. In this chilling portrait of America's Sin City, lady luck is just as likely to dispense cold hard cash as a cold-hearted killing. Brand-new stories by: John O’Brien, David Corbett, Scott Phillips, Nora Pierce, Bliss Esposito, Felicia Campbell, Jaq Greenspon, José Skinner, Pablo Medina, Christine McKellar, Lori Kozlowski, Vu Tran, Celeste Starr, Preston L. Allen, Tod Goldberg, and Janet Berliner. ?? Las Vegas provides the classic sophistication and darkness necessary for a deadly noir story. Stylish, sultry, brimming with ambition and greed, the characters that populate this literary Las Vegas are pushed to the extremes of human experience. From the neon glitter of the Strip to the treacherous views of Red Rock Canyon and Boulder City, from the desperation of Naked City to the racial tensions of the Westside, no other location offers so many different avenues leading to serious trouble.   Many legendary authors have turned their attention to Vegas to investigate the city's moods and mysteries. Now, the most recent crop of acclaimed writers explore the secret neighborhoods and byways of America's most sinful city, offering readers not only compelling noir tales but also an insider's understanding of this steamy oasis. These authors take readers beneath the surface flash of Freemont Street and the Strip and into the gritty multicultural environs of underground Vegas. Jarret Keene is author/editor of three books, including the poetry collection Monster Fashion, the alt-travel tome The Underground Guide to Las Vegas, and the unauthorized rock bio The Killers: Destiny Is Calling Me. He lives in Las Vegas. Todd James Pierce is the author of three books, including the novel A Woman of Stone and the short story collection Newsworld, which won the 2006 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. He is an assistant professor of English at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, California.??

If you need a NAS for your home, buy this one!

For those not familiar with exactly what this product is:This is NOT an external hard drive. It is much more than that. If you need an external hard drive, this will not work for you. This is basically a 4 TB file server, or NAS (Network Attached Storage). You attach it to your network via an Ethernet (CAT5e/6) cable. Plug it into your wireless router or a hub/switch on your network. The box says "Access your files wirelessly!". That's a little misleading. There is no wifi on this. That just means that computers on your network that are connected wirelessly can access it. Lame, but whatever.Let me just address the complaints from other reviews:About "Slowness":First you should probably read the manual. It defaults to "Power Saver Mode" which puts the hard drives to "sleep" after a specified idle time. So if your hard drives are "sleeping" there will be some lag in you initial access time. I have had the 6GB Duo for about three weeks now. Though I love the concept, the instability of the system is cause for alarm. Bad reviews are real - file I/O performance slows over time

I won't re-hash what others have said, but the drive I/O performance (or lack thereof) is a real problem - especially with Time Machine.I have this device hard-wired into my router (Gb connection) and my MacBook Pro is also hard-wired into the same router. My initial Time Machine backup went with reasonable speed, but subsequent, incremental updates to the drive started dragging. I found that if I reboot the WD MyBook Live, it works better for a period of time, but then slows down. With wired, Gb networking end-to-end the Time Machine performance should be on par with my 800Mb Firewire portable drive, but it's not even close. Even just copying files via the Mac Finder over the (wired) network to the drive is agonizingly slow. That said, however, their iPhone app and web-based access tools are some of the best I've seen from this product category, so I will keep the device and see if things improve with a future software update; hence the 3 stars... 3/5 Kenneth F. Bad Reviews Don't Reflect Latest Software

I found the product I got to be way better than the reviews indicated. The main reason seems to be software updates. You should really ignore any complaints you read about the device from 2010, and a lot of them from 2011. The physical hardware is just a basic drive with a processor and a network connection. What makes a difference is the software - both on the drive, and the mybooklive website/iphone apps. Most of the complaints I was worried about turned out to have been fixed in the latest software. For example: A review complained about iTunes media sharing being broken by the latest iTunes update - I had no problem doing iTunes media sharing with the latest iTunes. A review complained about the Mio-net connectivity - This device no longer uses Mio-net.The mybooklive website lets you map your home mybook live drive as a network drive from any computer away from home. Works great for Sonos..

Yesterday I purchased one of these drives to use as a Network Attached Storage drive for my Sonos music system. This drive is perfect for that setup and exceeded my expectations. The setup for this drive is a snap. My PC and Sonos system recognized it with zero issues. The drive throughput is about 70Mb/s which is plenty for my purposes. Also (and a key feature for Sonos), this drive will spin down after inactivity and will even let you set how long it waits before spinning down (have not seen any other drive in this price range which will do that). Also, this drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system so no reformatting is needed like with most external drives. Having a drive with NAS capabilities is excellent because you need less hardware to make the drive available to Sonos. Lastly, because the drive doesn't have an on/off switch, you won't have to worry if you lose power that you'll have to turn this back on (like with the old Linksys NSLU2).The only reason I... 4/5 Thomas B Goodloe "Berkeley Goodloe" (Richmond, VA United States) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2010

Extremely flimsy usb3 connector design - BUYER BEWARE

This applies to the My Book USB3 2TB drive.First the good stuff -It is a nice fast drive. HDTune showed and average speed around 90-100MB/s when connected to a USB3 port on my Lenovo W510 laptop. That is why I bought the thing, and it works well. A little pricey if you just need the space, but...

There are 2TB drives out there for less money and if all you need is a huge space, you might consider one of those. The value added in this package is the backup software that is bundled with the drive (actually, delivered right on the drive).WD Smartware is a backup/restore suite that, once installed, boots with your machine. If the MyBook is attached via your USB port, it will constantly monitor activity and make backups accordingly in the background in near real time without any action on your part. It also maintains multiple generations of files (you choose how many), so you can go back to, say, three versions ago if you need to recover a spreadsheet or other data file. You can also use it on multiple computers. Backups are stored under folders with the same name as the PC they're created on.I tested on a Win XP Pro laptop and a Win7 laptop and detected no system slowdowns at all. Every now and then the activity light on the drive would... 4/5 Jeffrey Pittman "Jeff" (Durham, NC USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2010

How to set up your WD My Book Essential 3TB 3.0 USB drive

I have six of these drives. I have had no serious problems to date, the oldest I've owned for about four months now. I will return to edit this review should a drive fail in the future.UPDATE: I wrote the above in October 2011. Writing now in October 2012, I now have eight of these drives. No problems to date.SECOND UPDATE: Writing now in November 2013. I have nine of these drives at this point. No problems to date. Here is my recommendation for how to set up the drive, out of the box. I've done this a bunch of times now, so I'm getting routine at it, and thought I'd write it out for others. Some caveats, for what it might be worth:--I am running Windows 7 64-bit.--I use both 3.0 and 2.0 connectivity, depending on the computer I hook these up to.--I have no use for the included backup software, so I can't speak to that. If you are buying this for the backup software, skip this review, because I'm going to be describing... 4/5 Scott Saccenti (Colora, MD USA) - See all my reviews, October 12, 2011

Update 2/23/14 - Okay fellow Amazon shoppers. I'm caving in to some of the comments that have been posted on my review and upping my star rating to four stars. Reason being that the price of this storage drive keeps fluctuating so much that it's often a better deal than other, lesser drives out there. I've also edited my review a bit to accommodate that. The drive itself has been working like a champ for me so far and I've got no complaints there. However, I'm still holding off one star due to most of the reasons I stated in my original review. The WD Smartware included software is still garbage despite recent updates/patches, and I stick to my story that the packaging is misleading to the non-technical.I had been using a Seagate FreeAgent Go 640GB portable drive for about three years now, and wanted something with some more space and higher transfer speeds. I purchased this drive for it's beefy 2 TB of storage space and speedier USB 3.0 interface.Out of the... 4/5 Gravemind (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) How to format on your Mac - A nice external hard drive be sure to get the best price.

This is a nice drive be sure to click through each of the storage amounts because of the time of writing this review the 500 GB was only $10 less than the 1 TB and doubling your space for $10 is a no-brainer (Also be sure to click through the different colors as the prices vary for the same storage size for example the time of writing this review the black and blue 2 TB hard drives were $20 less than the red 2 TB hard drive). I never use backup software so I won't comment on that. I'm on a Mac and time machine does it for me but even when I was a Windows user I would just format the hard drive and use it to store my files. I also recommend doing just one partition as personally I think when I get into multiple partitions it gets confusing as to where I put what and then you will run out of space on one partition while having ample on the other just use folders. If you're a Mac user setting this hard drive up with your computer is super easy follow these steps... 4/5 Chuck Bittner "Disabled comedian & gamer!" Prices change, so do compare them before buying. My Passport Ultra is a fast drive. I've had several USB3 drives over the years and they are all real fast. Excellent Quite Drive

I tested the drive on a 2011 iMac and 2011 MacBook Air and performance was excellent. What I like the most about this drive is that it is currently the quietest Thunderbolt drive on the market today. The unit uses two Western Digital Green drives and this results in lower power consumption and the ability to cool without need of a noisy fan. I compared the unit to a 6TB Lacie 2Big Thunderbolt system and the difference in noise level was enormous. The Lacie unit uses a Fan and when resuming from sleep makes a fairly loud groaning sound. The WD drive by comparison is almost silent. The quiet operation comes at a cost however . Speed of reading and writing data is significantly slower than the Lacie 2Big unit. The My Book Thunderbolt operating in RAID 0 read data at a rate of about 220 MB/sec while the Lacie 2Big provided about 310 Mb/sec performance. This can be accounted for by the Green drives used in the My Book being only 5900 RPM drives versus the noisier 7200... 5/5 J. White - See all my reviews, May 12, 2012

The drive itself is really quiet. The setup is simple and fast. I use this drive as a backup drive with my MacBook Pro using TimeMachine. I therefore configured the drive for RAID 1 mode, mirroring of data (disks). The goal is obvious, if one drive fails you still have access to your data on the mirrored drive. Blazing Yet Silent!

The double Thunderbolt is now connected and I've been using it for video. (Previously I was using the Passport, which got full and with my updated video software is now only serving as an archive.) Once again, I'm editing video projects using the latest version of Final Cut Pro X. The thunderbolt has not missed a beat, throwing video files back and forth as well as enabling faster import times into FCP-X. Import times are critical because you can wait long enough to drink a pot of coffee if your drive is not fast enough. The thunderbolt interface is a lightning rail into the Mac, sending data at incredible rates, enabling my video files to be available for use in reasonably short periods of time. Once the video is available and I'm editing, there is NO stutter as the drive moves from clip to clip. My projects are now approaching fifteen minutes of runtime, which means a large, fast drive, is critical and this thunderbolt is doing well. Surprisingly, this drive makes virtually no... 5/5 Daniel Putkowski "novelist, pilot, world trav... (Aruba, DWI) - See all my reviews, April 17, 2012
