Exactly what I wanted - not really

I purchased the WDG1U5000 as a backup to my existing iBook and my external 120GB SmartDisk Drive (which I also can't say enough about). I plugged in the 500GB, turned it on, my Mac found the drive and then I dragged and dropped 100GB of music and photos over my USB2.0 (took about 2/5hrs to copy). The process couldn't be easier or for a geek like me, more enjoyable.A great product, a great price and delivery was a snap - as usual, all from Amazon.Update - July 2007 - as time went on my digital capacity expanded and I was soon up to 125GB. When I went to add more music or photos to my hard drive, I noticed that my Mac would only display and allow me to use 149GB of my 500GB drive. I understand it has something to do with the formatting of the drive but after trying my best to fix it and trying to contact western digital multiple times - they offered ZERO help - I had to return it. Amazon was nice enough to take it back outside of policy...& I remain a highly... 5/5 Philly NW (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 4 and a half stars.

I also have the Western Digital My Book Premium Drive 500gb and when it was time to add more space I decided that I didn't need Firewire/400 and backup software. Even though they look like the same drive physically, the "Essential" drive looks cheaper. Probably because of the lack of Firewire port, the essential is slightly smaller in volume. The Premium edition had nice a nice hard feel and rubber footing around the edges of the top, back and bottom of the unit. However, with the essential, there's only 2 rubber footing on the bottom, thus it just feels cheaper than the premium. With that in mind, I think it's still a better value than the premium, since you're getting the same storage, you save 40-50 bucks by not having Firewire and backup software.Performance-wise, my 2 mybooks have been performing just dandy. I've only had the essential for a couple of weeks, the premium one I've had for I think about 8 months. I use it to backup all my video, music and... 4/5 Jimmy Tran (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews, May 29, 2007

This review is from: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1U5000 (Personal Computers) I spent the past year digitizing my CD collection and when I outgrew my 200 gig internal hard drive I decided to go the external route. The My Book was a good choice. The drive is extremely quiet, takes up very little space, and does not get hot in normal use. I really like that the drive is smart enough to automatically go into stand-by when you turn off your P.C.The first thing you will want to do if you buy one is to delete the junk software that comes preinstalled on the disc. The second thing is to reformat the drive to use the NTFS file system, which is more reilable than FAT 32.The drive is not a speed demon but is more than adequate for streaming music. I recently bought a second one to backup the first. Unless you need the Firewire port, the Essential Edition should be adequate. No Problem Archiving DISH NETWORK DVR recordings over to WD DVR Expander

My DISH Network DVR with a 350 hour recording capacity was just about filled up with HD movies and TV shows that I wanted to save. I have a Panasonic DVD Recorder for such a purpose to offload DVR recordings to a Standard DVD disk, but it does not contain an HDMI input; it has only S-VIDEO or component inputs to use (from DVR to Panasonic DVD Recorder) so the movies placed on DVD disk are never as 'sharp' or (in most cases) 'not full-screen' as the original HD DVR recording. After calling DISH Network to find out which External Hard Drive would 'play nice' with their VIP722 DVR, I selected the WD MyBook AV DVR Expander 1TB USB 2.0/ eSATA External Hard Drive. I ordered it from Amazon.com and it arrived unharmed in about a week (in original sealed WD packaging suspended in the Amazon cardboard box by air packets.)Included with the WD External Hard Drive were both USB and eSATA cables for transfer from the DISH NETWORK DVR and an AC adaptor to power the WD External Hard... 5/5 Wayne T. VERY IMPORTANT Re: using WD DVR expander with a Tivo DVR, if you get pixelation and sound breakup!

I’ve used these 1TB WD expanders with both a Tivo Series 3 and a TiVo Premiere 4; bought the Tivo Series 4 expander from Amazon in 2011 (per their Order records) and the Series 3 several years before that, but don’t recall exactly when I bought it or from whom, very possibly from Tivo. They have both worked very well and I recommend them highly. BUT….. and this might be an important “BUT” warning for you if you experience my problem.Several months ago I started to get intermittent and extreme picture and sound breakup on my Series 3 Tivo/Expander, which I eventually realized only occurred with high definition (HD) cable channels. The same channels on my system, e.g., the local low definition and HD NBC channels, both carry identical programming, but only the HD channels exhibited the pixelation breakup. I had my cable provider replace the cabling to the Series 3 TV and replace all the connectors, but to no avail, and they recommended... 5/5 MikeCG (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 30 seconds later mission accomplished!

5/5 wiscy - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD 1TB My Book AV DVR Expander External Hard Drive - USB 2.0 - WDBABT0010HBK-NESN (Personal Computers) I received my 1TB WD My Book AV Expander today. Here's how it went down:Unpack, plug into back of DVR with included eSATA cable, plug WD HDD into wall outlet, turn on DVR and TV. See prompt on TV about new attached storage. Look for and find remote that kids misplaced. Then Press A on remote to format. Wait 30 seconds. Now when I press List it shows 5% Full (used to be 40%). It didn't even interrupt the current recording. No more taping over my World Cup matches. How easy is that?So far no heat from new hard drive and it's whisper quiet. Drive also comes with a USB cable (not needed for this project as the Scientifc Atlanta 8300HD supports eSATA only for adding storage.) From WD's website this drive is on the list of supported drives for Time Warner SA8300HD but it was still a relief to see it immediately recognized. Solid, Reliable and Fast

Overall, this hard drive does everything it promised. It's small, quiet, sleek, and holds a ton of data.Considering that this disk is marketed to both Mac and PC users, it's no surprise that WD went with the lowest common denominator in terms of formatting. The device is formated as Windows FAT32 out of the box, which works on all systems, but is generally not ideal. I have a Mac and I wanted to take advantage of journaling and the HFS+ filesystem. Re-partitioning the drive took less than five minutes using Apple's Disk Utility. Doing this erased everything on the disk, but all the bundled software is also included on a CD.I have the disk hooked up my Mac mini with firewire 400, and it's great. All the lights work (including the capacity gage), and the drive goes to the sleep whenever the mini does. (Make sure to install the drivers to get this functionality). The only slight annoyance is that the drive takes an unusually long time to mount when plugged into... 5/5 H. Liebowitz (Berkeley, CA USA) - See all my reviews, January 11, 2007

Drive detection problems and poor customer support

I have several Western Digital (WDC) disk drives. I normally prefer WDC disk drives. Until this one all have been great.Problem #1: Often the "My Book Pro Edition" external hard drive is not detected by Windows XP when my computer is started. I have a new PC computer (Gateway with Athlon X2 dual core) that I have the My Book Pro Edition external drive connected to. The drive is connected via the FireWire400 interface. I have to warm reboot and sometimes even cold reboot before the drive is recognized by Windows. Once the drive is recognized it works OK.Problem #2: The Retrospect Express backup software that is provided with the drive does not display the graphic images in the Help subsystem. Since Retrospect Express is not very intuitive, it is necessary to read the instructions in the Help system. It is very difficult to know what the instructions are referring to when the graphics do not display (only a graphics place holder is displayed)... 3/5 D. 500GB Firewire 800? Yes, please.

I've been using this drive for about a month now on my MacBook Pro laptop, and I really like it. It doesn't take up much space in my computer backpack, but it might be bulky for some briefcase-style laptop bags. The Firewire 800 interface is extremely fast and there are Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces for those who need them. Firewire 800/400 and USB 2.0 cables were included, which is a nice touch. I did read in another review that some of these hard drive models were shipped without a Firewire 800 cable, and the manufacturer had to be contacted to correct the situation. The backup software included with the drive (Retrospect) received fairly poor user reviews, and after trying it for myself I decided to remove it and spend $35 on a backup software suite that I could rely upon (Mac users might want to check out a backup product called "Synk"). I would expand more on the problems I had, but it's been a while now and I can't remember. I would have given this product... 4/5 krawz (IL, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
