This is a great idea poorly executed

This is a great idea poorly executed. The selling point is that you won't lose data because your files are "mirrored" to two identical 6 TB disks. The implication is that when one disk fails, it's a simple matter of replacing it, allowing the surviving disk to mirror itself onto the failed disk, and your work won't miss a beat.Don't believe it. This unit failed within mere months after purchase. First one drive wasn't available and then the other. When I checked with WD I found that the drives are not user replaceable. The whole unit, all your duplicated data, has to be sent to WD and they give you a new unit. Your data is lost.Since the failure of my unit was intermittent, thanks be to a higher power, I bought a second 12 TB Mycloud unit and copied all of the files to the new unit. Presumably because the original unit was failing, it took a full week to transfer files from the failing unit to the new unit. WD then gave me an RMA to return the... 1/5 J. This is what you are looking for If you don't need all the bells and whistles - Works Great - Great Deal - No Issues

This is a good, nice looking, and quiet NAS. The drives alone would cost $300, so $50 for the RAID, USB, 1GB NIC and OS is a pretty decent deal. Ignore the poor reviews for performance. Those users probably have network or setup issues. If you don't need all the bells and whistles like on the fly transcoding or dual NIC's, HDMI and VM capabilities, then this box is for you.I think many of the poor reviews could be due to the fact that it was updating firmware the first few days. I noticed that performance drops when the device is auto updating its firmware. It will be updating firmware a few times when you first plug it in and I'm sure most people started copying data to it immediately like me. Once the updates were done, performance would return to normal. I average 60MB/second over the network port.I've had no problem creating shares, setting up users, and transferring my first 2TB of data. No timeouts or write issues. I used both Robocopy and Drag and Drop to... 5/5 Jay - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very powerful, many features, very happy

Bought this after weeks and weeks of reading about similar products. I was worried since some of the reviews I saw stated that the device is slow among other things.Well, don't have other NAS to compare it with but this is a good product. It has many advanced options, some of which I haven't yet played with like the iTunes server, torrents and streaming. My main use, for now, is the file-server part and to store documents, music, movies and family pictures. To set it up you have to download a couple of Windows applications, all of which are detailed in the included brochure. After that, you can rename your device, set up folders, user accounts, and opt to use (or not) the default hard drive mirror configuration. You can create cloud user accounts which allow you to see everything stored from your iPhone (after getting the free apps), and that part is very easy to set up and use.It has default PUBLIC folders which means that every user will be able to access,... 5/5 Rey (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
